Orfeo: In Orfeo, its final production for the season, Cape Town Opera has brought on board a dynamic team of innovative creatives to work this adaptation of Monteverdi’s Orpheus: Jaco Bouwer (director and designer), Magdalene Minnaar (associate director), Ina Wichterich (choreographer) and Wolf Britz (lighting design). Bouwer tracks Orpheus’s descent into darkness as he combs the underworld for his wife, Euridic. Bouwer: “It is a universal human impulse to try to retrieve what is lost, to want to go back into the past and change it. But we create underworlds in our own lives, by keeping of secrets and by consigning parts of our experience to the realm of the forgotten.” The cast is accompanied by the Camerata Tinta Barocca – a Cape Town based baroque ensemble – with a core of string players with a harpsichord.
