Celebs, school kids match wits for good cause

- THEMBEKA DLAMUKA

LOCAL celebrities and school children will enter a battle of wits to raise funds for NGO Ikamva Labantu.

The quiz today will see small teams of school children pitted against adults at the V&A Waterfront’s Amphitheatre in a nail-biting battle to see who is smarter.

The event is being held to to raise funds for the organisation’s Fuel2Grow project.

Fuel2Grow helps the Rainbow Centre afterschool programme in Gugulethu. This includes meals, sport, art, equipment, health care and academic support.

Prepare yourself for a day of fun when participants take on one another on general knowledge questions. The audience will have a number of opportunities to donate to Fuel2Grow while enjoying a fun day out.

“We hope the children are smarter than the adults and will win the games” said Nyasha Manjengenja, Fuel2Grow programme manager. The initiative aims to raise R1.5 million by the end of the year.

The funds will go towards the holistic support programme in Gugulethu, which provides services to vulnerable children aged 6-18 years. With the sponsorship of the Waterfront, the Fuel2Grow Battle of Wits will take place from 10.30am to 1.45pm.

Ikamva Labantu launched Fuel2Grow on September 22 and it will be running until the end of December. Fuel2Grow is about child and youth enrichment for children in the areas of academic help, health, and food, to name just a few.

Battle of the Wits will be hosted by Katlego Maboe from Strictly Come Dancing and Expresso on SABC3. Other celebrities include Michael Mol, Africa Melane, Zolani and Danilo Acquisto.

The celebs will be placed in an adult team and will go up against kids from schools around Cape Town as well as some of the kids from the Fuel2Grow programme.

There will be prizes for the winning teams as well as the audience participants throughout the event.

Katlego and the Fuel2Grow team will also be encouraging the audience and passers-by to donate to the campaign to help reach its R1.5m goal.

The fun-filled day will finish off with a performance by famous South African group Freshlyground.

Ikamva Labantu works with 150 children.

Manjengenja hopes the event will be well supported.

“A child’s academic future is determined by the opportunities, support and resources during their school-going years.

“Bearing this in mind, we have designed our programme to ensure that we are involved in providing holistic support to the children in our care,” Manjengenja said.

Fuel2Grow gives them access to resources, support services, and the motivation they need to fulfil their dreams. “My money is on the kids!” Manjengenja was hopeful that they will reach their target amount.

“We believe it is possible, it can be done.”
