Savvy student’s small marketing business takes top prize

- SHEN WU TAN

NICHOLAS XHONXA, co-owner of a marketing company, won the top student and business award at University of Stellenbosch Business School’s programme.

He and other small businessmen and women who successfully completed the sponsored Small Business Academy ( SBA) programme received certificates at an award ceremony yesterday.

The company, SSA Ads in Bothasig, was founded by Xhonxa and his brother last November. It offers promotions, brand activation and development and the embroidery of clothing, servicing brands like Thoza Tours and Care Foundation Guild.

“Many of the below-the-line marketing and promotional campaigns are run in townships... that’s where we come in handy because we understand cultural dynamics of the townships.”

Dr Marietjie Theron-Wepener, head of the SBA programme, said SMMEs (small, medium and micro-sized enterprises) drive economic growth and innovation and play a leading role in the country.

Citing a study by The Small Enterprise Development Agency, Theron-Wepener said SMMEs contributed 42 percent to GDP in 2015 compared to 33 percent to GDP in 2010.

“But the same research also shows that not all SMMEs survive their first years,” Theron-Wepener added.

“Typical hindrances include inability to produce an acceptable business plan, poor market research, and lack of access to vibrant markets.”

“With this in mind, business education is fundamental in sustaining these small business owners and education providers and corporates need to step- up their involvement to share their knowledge and skill set.”

The SBA programme pairs participants with a university MBA alumnus for mentorship, creates networking opportunities and offers business, financial and operational knowledge to expand and strengthen businesses.

Programme participants learn about business administration, financial management, business plan writing and marketing amongst other subjects.

Xhonxa, who holds a B.Com honours degree and has been involved in the business since 2006, said the SBA programme has had a significant impact on his business.

“We are more focused now and have a greater understanding of new trends in business and how to be one step ahead.”
