Another doubleheader weekend to test the depth in the Cape bullpens

- SEAN CAMPBELL

ALL Major League teams are involved in a doubleheader this weekend, with league leaders Bellville travelling to Bothasig to battle it out with the defending league champions today.

A youthful Bothasig pitching department will find it tough against the strong and experience Bellville hitting lineup. Damon Mitchell, Devon Clarke, Keagan Lazarus and Jordan King will be tested by the visitors, who are always aggressive with the bat.

Bothasig are also looking for bigger contributions from their hitters against the likes of Bertus Mister, Bruce McClellan and Callan Pearce.

Maitland Giants make their first trip to Mitchells Plain to take on the in-form Westridge Yankees, who whipped Giants 20-3 in their first encounter this season.

Giants’ pitching duo of Jas Shergill and Jayde Thorne can hopefully restrict an improved Yankee hitting lineup, while will also hope their sluggers improve.

Ashley Julies, Luwayne du Plessis and Ashwin Booysen have been doing well with the bat for Yankees.

Athlone A’s travel to Durbanville still looking for a bigger effort from their hitters to support their strong pitchers.

The pitching of Dean Jacobs, Lloyd Stevens and Carl Michaels can restrict their opponents, but it is the men with the bat who should be winning the games for the A’s.

Durbanville must decide whether to go with the experienced Kevin Townend and Darren Smith, or the younger arms of Damien Perkins, Cameron Fortuin or Terence le Roux on the mound.

VOB travel to winless Fixtures Major League Today: Promotion League Tomorrow: Crusaders, who have struggled for consistency in their hitting and pitching.

The visitors will again rely on Grant Emmanuel, Paul Bell and Jared Heynes to create an impetus.

Tomorrow, the pitching depth of all the teams will be tested after their workloads today.

Bellville host Giants who they beat 6-0 last weekend, conceding one hit.

Giants will hope for an improved performance, but will also be wary how their pitchers will be extended.

Bothasig host A’s hoping to revenge their 5-1 defeat last week.

This will be a tough encounter as Athlone will rely on their pitching while Bothasig put their faith in their hitters.

Crusaders travel to Westridge for their clash with Yankees, who have been in impressive form this season. They are third position on the log and will be keen to put more points between them and those below while also closing in on the frontrunners.

VOB make the long trip to Durbanville in the hope of avenging last week’s 14- 6 defeat. Again, the bullpens will be extended with Durbanville having the more recognised pitching complement.

Depending on how VOB fair against Crusaders today, and how effective are their pitchers, will determine who they have available to throw tomorrow.
