CAIRO: Egypt’s long- time president Hosni Mubarak has been released from detention after nearly six years.

Mubarak returned yesterday to his house in the eastern Cairo quarter of Heliopolis after his release from a military hospital where he had been detained, his lawyer Farid al-Deeb confirmed.

“He had breakfast with his family and a number of friends,” al-Deeb said. – dpa

‘Two-state solution’

BERLIN: Chancellor Angela Merkel has reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to a twostate solution for peace in the Middle East, fanning Palestinia­ns’ hopes that she will mediate a future peace deal.

“I still do not see a reasonable alternativ­e to the goal of a two-state solution,” Merkel said after meeting Palestinia­n President Mahmoud Abbas in Berlin. – dpa
