Dance the Michael Flatley way
SINCE 1996 Lord of the Dance Michael Flatley and his company of dancers have enthralled hundreds of thousands of fans from around the world with their energetic brand of Irish folk dancing. Now the company is set to return to South Africa later this year for the Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games tour, and this time around, dance enthusiasts will get an opportunity to learn first hand the skills of progressive Irish dance, popularised by Flatley.
A series of Michael Flatley Dance Academy “pop-up” workshops are scheduled to take place at various theatres in Cape Town and Johannesburg in August. These will be held in conjunction with the Dangerous Games tour (Cape Town, August 8 to 12, followed by performances in Johannesburg August 15 toSeptember 3).
The hour long workshops are open to dance enthusiasts of all ages, and include various activities such as mastering Irish dance techniques, all taught by members of the Dangerous Games cast. Participants will be grouped according to their age and their degree of ability in dance.
Organisers say that the goal of the Michael Flatley Dance Academy is to mentor and teach participants this traditional and iconic dance form, while bringing out the confidence within the children and adults who will be performing on stage.
The workshops will also focus on Flatley’s “3Ps” approach to dance: performance, perfection and positivity.
