Polluter trade-ins

-

BRITAIN said it could introduce a scrappage scheme to get the most polluting cars and vans off its roads and charge some drivers of old vehicles to enter parts of the country, as it strives to improve air quality.

The government wanted to delay publication of its plans until after the June 8 election, but a court ordered it to release them to comply with EU rules on nitrogen dioxide limits.

Ministers were said to be considering a scrappage scheme that would give motorists up to £2 000 (R35 000) to trade in gas-guzzling models, but in the document, they set a number of conditions for such a plan. – Reuters
