What the stats say
SOUTH Africa’s last national Census included a special focus on the retirement sector. Among the findings were:
The number of people aged 60 and older increased between 1996 and 2011 from 2.8 million to 4.1 million.
Projections are that the older population will grow to around 7 million by 2030.
There were only 66 older men for every 100 older women.
In terms of living arrangements, 50.6% of the elderly lived in extended households at the time of the Census.
About a third (32.5%) of the households which were headed by the elderly had five or more members. – Tracy Bartlett
