Health concerns over Boland waste proposal

-

IN RESPONSE to Gordon Taylor’s article “Consider new waste management technology” (Weekend Argus, August 5), the Wellington advocacy groups opposed to the incinerator do not dispute the need to consider the use of new waste management technology, including Biological Treatment (MRBT), in an integrated waste management approach.

What they oppose is Drakenstein Municipality’s Waste Incineration project, which includes blatantly flawed processes, as a solution to Wellington’s waste crises.

The fact is that the municipality has dedicated very little time and resources to waste-stream design improvements and producerresponsibility considerations – something which should have been done long before even contemplating a high-risk R1 billion waste incinerator plant.

The affected community has legitimate concerns about the proposed waste incinerator.

The residents of Hillcrest; Happy Toddler’s Crèche; Wellington Primary School; St Albans Primary School;

Can you imagine the thousands over time…

Bergriver High School; Verbetering Skool; Hillcrest Primary School; Weltevrede Secondary School will all be living within a 700m radius of the location of the proposed incinerator.

How would you like to have a waste incinerator, based on a flawed process, built 700m from your house?

Besides the waste incinerator, can you imagine the consequences of eight-ton waste disposal trucks, thousands over time, carting waste to the incinerator and carrying hazardous ash away from it and passing your house and children’s school?
