Kemp takes the reins at WP

- MIKE DE BRUYN

WESTERN PROVINCE Bowls holds its annual general meeting at Pinelands Bowling Club this morning.

Graeme Kemp ( Edgemead president) is to take over from John Edwards as president of the biggest district in the country, while one of either Gerrit Milligen (Bellville) and Christoffel Olivier (Pollsmoor) will serve as vice-president. The duo’s fate lies in the hands of club delegates in attendance.

Plumstead’s Edwards becomes an ordinary member after holding the top post for two years. He is sure to receive a deserving handclap for a job well done.

His term in office was without controversy, so kudos to him and all members will want to see him playing again after a testing time of things health-wise.

“It was an honour to lead WP Bowls,” said Edwards.

“I just want to thank my support crew for all they did to make my job that much easier and pleasant.

“We hosted big tournaments and won praise from players from around the country for our excel- lent greens, so to all those who played a part in making it happen, a big thank you and much appreciated.

“Our sport faces many challengers but I believe that if everyone comes together to find solutions to the problems faced then we can look forward to a positive future,” continued Edwards.

“Pleasingly, membership in our neck of the woods has stabilised to 2822.

“That said, clubs are always are under pressure to increase numbers.

“Let’s also all strive to ensure that no more clubs close down.

“In this regard, we’ve seen a club like Atlantic Green Point shut down, something I wouldn’t have predicted five years ago. Camps Bay is set to follow suit after a valiant fight against the odds, they’ve received notice to close down.

“Glen Country Club will be ready to welcome those members.

“To our provincial bowlers, well done for all the medals won over the past two years; our open men landing a gold medal to end a long barren run set the bar high for those to follow.

“Good bowling for all.”
