It’s a Tygers-Macaws showdown

- SEAN CAMPBELL

IN-FORM team VOB Macaws take on unbeaten log-leaders Bellville Tygers at the PP Smit Sportsground in Bellville in the Baseball Association of WP Major League today..

Second-placed Bothasig Knights host Athlone A’s at Abe Sher Sportsground in Bothasig, to complete a couple of matches featuring the top four teams in the league.

Both Athlone and VOB have recovered well after sluggish starts to the season.

VOB lost their first three games, but have turned things around and are now on a seven-game winning streak and will hope to inflict a first defeat on Bellville.

VOB have been fortunate in a few games in which they have come from behind in the latter stages to secure victories.

Bellville will certainly not be pushovers. It is no fluke they are top in the league.

They will once again back their hitting ability to come to the fore to put VOB under early pressure. Bellville won the first-round fixture between the sides 14-3.

Fourth-placed Athlone A’s will be hoping to maintain their current winning away to Bothasig.

Bothasig also possess a strong hitting line-up and A’s will seek to minimise the errors so that no additional players will be put on the bases.

What was a hallmark of their game, good defence, has now become an Achilles heel for the youthful A’s side.

The experienced Bothasig, who beat A’s 10-0 in their last encounter, will punish A’s if they don’t bring their A-game.

In other Major League games struggling Maitland Giants host Grassy Park Crusaders in a crucial encounter for both teams.

Giants have picked up only three wins from 10 games, while Crusaders, after beginning the season with five wins from five games, then lost four consecutive games.

They managed to secure a win against Helderberg Pirates last week and will be looking to maintain that turnaround in their formline.
