Stellenbosch chase an elusive victory

- MIKE DE BRUYN

TWO former PSL teams, both from Johannesburg, occupy the top two places on the National First Division table.

Highlands Park are top on 26 points, having won eight of 13 matches while Jomo Cosmos, after a sluggish start to their campaign, sit four points off the pace.

The University of Pretoria, another former top-flight club, round off the podium ahead of Mbombela United and Stellenbosch FC.

Park crushed second-bottom Richard’s Bay last weekend and are expected to make it two wins on the road today when they meet Mthatha Bucks, who went down 2-1 away to Mbombela.

Bucks, who are without a coach, have lost four of their last five outings.

The frontrunners are on an eight- game unbeaten run that has seen them leading the field for the last six weeks.

Cosmos entertain KZN’s Royal Eagles tomorrow at Vosloorus and have much to ponder after squandering a two-goal half-time lead in a 2-2 draw with Witbank Spurs last time out.

Cosmos are unbeaten in their last six starts, during which they’ve scored 14 goals, while Eagles haven’t won in six attempts and also haven’t been able to keep a clean sheet this season.

Stellenbosch welcome Mbombela to Parow Park today and will be chasing back-to-back victories after ending a six-game winless run with a 1-0 home win over Eagles.

Mpumalanga-based Mbombela come to the Mother City having not lost to Stellenbosch in three previous meetings.

Ubuntu Cape Town have propped up the log for the past eight weeks, having won once from 13 outings. But tomorrow (Sunday) at Parow Park could see them delivering against fellow strugglers Uthongathi FC ,who do come into the fixture in a good frame of mind following a victory last time out over Eagles that ended a five-match winless streak.

The KZN side has, however, not won on the road yet in what will be the first meeting between the two sides.

Cape Town All Stars were in action yesterday at home to the University of Pretoria.
