Primary school pupils receive learning hand-up
A CAPE Flats school has started to feel the beneficial effects of the Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots initiative.
Forres Preparatory School in Rondebosch is part of the initiative where the school encourages their pupils, parents, staff and the community to care about the Earth, its people and animals.
As part of the initiative, Forres has joined with Kewtown Primary School in Athlone this year, and will continue to do so in the future.
Forres has invited Kewtown pupils to watch theatre productions at their school, and Forres pupils have gone to Kewtown to help the grade 5 and 6 pupils with mathematics workshops, so they can obtain better marks.
As a final contribution to Kewtown, Forres decided to collect funds, appeal to staff, friends and the community to collect stationery for their 580 pupils and make 15 teacher packs.
True to Forres’ love for helping, they exceeded their expectations by creating a pencil case filled with pencils, pens, glue, erasers, scissors, rulers, coloured pencils for each pupil at the school.
Each class then received a box filled with extra stationery, coloured card and paper, photocopy paper, and exercise books, among other things.
Forres delivered a minibus full of goods to the school on Monday, ready to surprise the pupils in 2018.
Forres feels that if a child can start the year off equipped with the correct stationery, huge stress is lifted from the pupils, which means more time and energy can be devoted to focusing on school work and more academic success.
Forres would like to challenge schools to become part of the
Roots and Shoots Foundation and embark on helping to nurture future generations to care for our Earth, its people and animals.
