Bay where rich play, but many can afford to buy and stay

-

PLETTENBERG Bay continues its reign as one of the most sought-after coastal property locations in the province, with data showing that in two successive yearly periods property transactions have topped R1 billion.

Even in the weak economic climate, the local market remains active and agents expect a busy summer season for sales and rentals.

Kevin Engelsman, Seeff ’s licensee for the area, says from the start of 2017 until the end of October, the company sold 125 units with a value of more than R340 million.

“Plettenberg Bay also tops the country’s Blue Flag beaches list with six top-rated swimming and surf beaches. It is also a hot spot for whale watching and dolphin spotting.”

Engelsman says there is also plenty to do, including polo at Kurland, golfing and other sports along with yachting at the Keurbooms River mouth and marina. Furthermore, Plettenberg Bay is now also a sought-after wine region with the Plett Wine & Bubbly Route offering more than 16 wine farms.

According to a recent New World Wealth Report, Plettenberg Bay is second only to Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard for millionaire- owned second homes, but although widely regarded as the playground of the rich and famous, one does not need to be a millionaire to buy property in the area, says Engelsman.

“There is still a broad choice to suit every buyer’s need and budget, and you have plenty of waterside living to choose from with a long coastline and two rivers, the Keurbooms and Bitou.”

Vacant plots can still be found from about R200 000 and an apartment from around R650 000, while houses range from about R1.5m. Luxury houses range from around R10m to just under R60m for an exclusive beach house located on Beachy Head Drive, one of the most-sought after addresses in the country with fabulous sea views as far as the eye can see.

Engelsman says: “Aside from local demand, the town is also popular for semigrating buyers and retirees, given the fantastic weather and quality of life combined with excellent amenities. It remains a highly sought-after destination for holiday and second homes. Over the high summer season, the town is abuzz with holiday makers from across the world.”

The town offers “excellent facilities” including schools and shopping and quick access to Garden Route attractions, including Knysna and George, as well as its own local airport with direct flights from Cape Town and Joburg.
