ON THE BOARDS
THE Magic Shell. Most schools shut up shop on Thursday – let’s not say that they ‘broke up’ – not a phrase to use in this country. Sigh, a long school holiday period is ahead. Jungle Theatre – an award-winning children’s theatre company – is launching the season at the Masque from December 18-22, at 11am with a folk tale of how stories began. Based on an African folk story and “set in ancient times on the Wild Coast”, in this interactive production a husband and wife have many children but no stories to tell them. Wife decides to go on a journey to find stories and leaves husband at home to care for the kids. On her journey, she discovers stories as she encounters wild animals and other wonders. The tale is told in English and Xhosa, with original songs and masks. Tickets are R80. Bookings are through the theatre on 021 788 1898 or e-mail bookings@masquetheatre.co.za Boreal. Zip Zap Circus, in association with the High Commission of Canada, is presenting at the Zip
Zap Dome for two shows only: on December 15 and 16. This fusion of circus acrobatics, amazing lighting and sound, and daring aerial artistry is directed by Zip Zap’s Brent van Rensburg. Choreography is by Claudel Doucet from Canada. Canadian acrobats Samuel Renaud, Louis Joyal and Marilou Verschelden will perform with Zip Zap artists such as Jemma Rose Nelson, Jacobus Claassen, Jade Palmer, Sabine van Rensburg, Saskia van Rensburg, Jason Barnard and Phelelani Ndakrokra. Looks like it is going to be sensational. For all this, tickets are only R100 a pop. Book at Quicket https://www.quicket.co.za. Info from 0214180550.
Nice Coat (Lekker Jas). Soli Philander captivated audiences at the Baxter recently with his solo show, and he has been performing the show at Artscape this week. He wraps up today at 2pm and 5.30pm. It’s a gentle show, peppered with his insights and reflections on our complicated city. It is funny, poignant, wry – a tribute and a lament to the city, narrated in rhyme by the multitalented Philander. Tickets are R120. Book at Computicket, 0861 915 8000/ www.computicket.com
