NEW YEAR’S Eve at the theatre. Here are our three top picks:

Aunty Merle, The Musical. An upper for the festive season is Marc Lottering’s comedy-musical which is on at the Baxter until January 20 (the run has been extended), Monday to Friday at 8pm and two shows on Saturdays, 4pm and 8pm.

Lottering has written original music and songs. Tarryn Lamb who plays Aunty Merle’s daughter, Abigail has written some of the songs with him. The cast of 14 features Loukmaan Adams, Stephen Jubber, Kate Normington, Adrian Galley, Carmen Maarman, Daniel Richards, Royston Stoffels, Roberto Kyle, Sizwesandi­le Mnisi, Tankiso Mamabolo and Zandile Madliwa and Anray Amansure.

There is an on-stage band, fantastic sets and costumes.

Tickets for the performanc­e on

New Year’s Eve (December 31) are R260, including bubbly and after party in the foyer with live entertainm­ent and the artists mingling with the audience. For other shows they are R100-R160. Matinees (4pm)

Evita. This revival of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s celebrated musical is on at Artscape until

January 7.

Beautifull­y staged, this superb production is a return to the original production, sets and costumes. It is visually breathtaki­ng and includes actual footage of Eva Perón in Argentina.

UK performer Emma Kingston stars as Evita, Robert Finlayson as Perón and Jonathan Roxmouth as Che. There are alternates leads for some performanc­es.

Planet Mirth. Bring in the New

Year with tears of laughter with Alan Committie, who is on at Theatre on the Bay until January 13. Committie’s rapport with audiences is legendary – just don’t be late, as he may heckle you.
