THE weekend before payday doesn’t have to break the bank when it comes to enjoying the sights and sounds of the Mother City. Here’s a look at family-friendly events in and around Cape Town.
SYMPHONIC SHAKESPEARE AT MAYNARDVILLE
THE works of the Bard come alive in orchestral splendour this evening at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre in Wynberg.
Presented by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, this musical ode to Shakespeare brings symphonic classical music to the masses with orchestral elements that underscore the Bard’s words.
Featuring composers such as Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Nicolai and Berlioz to illustrate some of Shakespeare’s most famous works – including Romeo and Juliet and Midsummer Night’s Dream – the event promises to delight guests under the stars.
Experience this musical ode to Shakespeare from 8.15pm tonight. Tickets R150 to R220 through Computicket and
AArtscape Dial-A-Seat: 021 421 7695.
WEEKEND FOOTBALL FANS are in for a treat, with two big ticket events guaranteed to take soccer madness to fever pitch. Cape Town City take on Ajax Cape Town at Cape Town Stadium this afternoon in a much-anticipated derby.
The PSL clash kicks off at 3.30pm, with bragging rights as Cape Town’s best team up for grabs. Tickets at Computicket from R60.
Tomorrow, the women’s national team, Banyana Banyana, face off against their Swedish counterparts in an international friendly. Coach Desirée Ellis’s team take on the world No 10 team at Cape Town Stadium at 2pm.
Entry to the match is free, but tickets must be accessed via Computicket or at any Shoprite, Checkers or Checkers Hyper.
PIGCASSO
WITH a thriving arts culture in the city, Capetonians are often spoilt for choice when it comes to arts offerings.
But while it might sound like hogwash, a painting pig dubbed Pigcasso is turning the arts world on its head, with his very own pop-up display called OINK, which opens in the city today.
Featuring the works of the piggy prodigy, the exhibition will run until March 2018, before moving to London, Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam. (No kidding!)
The talented piggy was rescued from a slaughterhouse by an animal sanctuary, and is now on a mission to “paint a better picture for pig-kind”.
Some of his Jackson Pollock-esque works have fetched up to R25 000!
All proceeds from sales of Pigcasso’s artworks will go to Farm Sanctuary SA.
Visit the OINK pop-up pink exhibition at the V&A Waterfront Clock Tower. Entry is free.
