Country’s hottest young designers will pull out all the stops

THE crème of South Africa’s young and trendy designers have been roped in to kit out Mzansi’s A-listers when they take to the “green” carpet for the 2018 Sun Met at Kenilworth racecourse next Saturday.

Designer extraordin­aire David Tlale told Weekend Argus that while he has not yet been approached by any of SA’s A-list celebritie­s, he does expect them “to come knocking next week”.

Tlale missed the last two Met events because of internatio­nal commitment­s but will definitely not be missing the 2018 extravagan­za.

Tlale said the theme, “Style Ahead of the Field”, would deliver many surprises and racegoers may not opt for the obvious.

“Anything can be African. My advice though is for people to make an effort, be cool and, most importantl­y, be comfortabl­e,” said Tlale, and predicts bright colours, big hats, necklaces, lots of white and jeans.

“Africa has evolved so much. Men and women can really go crazy. There is just so much that people can do,” he added.

Tlale said he will be wearing “black on black” but did not want to reveal any details.

Local designer Mzukisi Mbane Mzu from Imprint ZA, said the theme had given designers carte blanche with colours and patterns.

“Imprint ZA is about celebratin­g Africa’s style. I have taken it back to its tribal roots and that is the theme in my designs,” said Mbane.

The self-taught designer has the added pressure of ensuring Miss SA, Adé van Heerden, sparkles on the day.

Other big names on his to-do list for the Met are DJ Tira and some of morning television’s Expresso presenters.
