Gifts to UK Royal family range from jewels to the unusual

-

GOLD and jewels are undoubtedly the perfect presents for royalty, but it’s the more unpredictable offerings to Britain’s royal family that stand out – a prosthetic hand, for example, or two fabric gnomes and some glitter balls for the Queen’s Christmas tree.

These were among the items listed this week when Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Kensington Palace published their annual list of official gifts received by the royal family.

Prince Edward received an unspecified brand of watch and a golden clock from the Sultan of Brunei.

Prince Charles’s gifts from the sultan included a watch, a pair of cufflinks, a ring and a ballpoint pen.

The Queen also received gifts from the sultan – including a silver-plated filigree ornament.

Slightly more unusual were two sets of Christmas tree glitter balls she received from the president of Germany.

Prince Philip received a travel backgammon set from the luxury leather goods firm Smythson, as well as a traditional Spanish cloak from the King and Queen of Spain.

She’s not yet a member of the Royal Family but Prince Harry’s fiancée Meghan Markle gets her first mention on the official gift list this year.
