Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition)
Mistreatment of Palestinians is the real issue
I’M SURPRISED that this fine paper’s letters page on January 13 was almost entirely dedicated to my views on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
I’m at a disadvantage because I’m arguing with the qualification provided by gutter education, while the Zionists have the privilege of being fed from the apartheid trough, but I will do my best.
I’m told that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. My argument is not against the Israeli model of government, it’s about the mistreatment of the Palestinians. The difference is easy to understand, unless you have Zionist blinkers on.
I’m told Zionism and Judaism are inseparable; Judaism is thought to be thousands of years old and Zionism is not yet 200. I dare to say the Zionist movement has hijacked the Jewish faith.
“The Jewish people have the right to freedom and political independence in their homeland,” according to correspondent Brian Josselowitz. Sir, all people have this right, and yes, the Palestinians are people too. You criticise my genetic comment but don’t dispute it, because you can’t, so instead I’m likened to Hitler or Dr Mengele. The fact is you’ve learnt the propaganda lesson from Goebbels’ archives. You dare to compare the Zionist lobby to the ANC of old, but we had Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo while you had the butcher Ariel Sharon.
While discussing local politics, let me remind you again where the Israeli sympathy was when my peers were being killed because of the type of greed that makes the parallels between Israel and apartheid South Africa clear.
I have yet to hear denial that the Palestinians are the descendants of Abraham, that they are Semitic, and that they are displaced so that cock-eyed racism can be hidden under the cloak of Zionism.
Thank you for the history lesson, Ruby Lee, but I am well aware of the sacking of Jerusalem. Seek retribution from the Romans, ditto the Germans, for not a single Palestinian gassed a single Jew in World War II, yet they have to pay for Jewish suffering.
Yes, the Arab states have failed the Palestinians horribly. But the fact that Israeli defendants can propagate this is as shameful as the Arab failings.
I don’t need to visit Israel, Mr Mazinter. This is, after all, the age of information, and while you are unashamedly proud of the support you receive from the American Fuhrer, the Palestinians had the eternal support of Mandela himself, and you will one day be remembered as being on the wrong side of this debate. Let me assure you that no country that deploys tanks and fighter jets against unarmed civilians can ever be described as humane.
Pat Fischer, there is no sense in what you attempt to say. Remember, I love fairness more than faith; French is the most romantic language in the world, but liberty, equality and fraternity sound beautiful in any language.
The collective response to my initial letter is sadly lacking, so I will end with the same question: If the right to return is absolute, will you fine people return the land stolen from my people, please?
