With refurbished rooms, secret olive grove and glorious sea views, this villa is pure luxury for the well-heeled
MOST OF US can only imagine spending a holiday in a Cape Town villa at R130 000 a night, which means Moondance Villa Fresnaye, launched at the end of last year for short and long term rentals and events, is well beyond the reach of most people.
Built a decade ago, with views across the Atlantic Seaboard, it has been refurbished to meet the growing demand of the luxury market.
“Architect Stefan Antoni’s design is lauded worldwide so we didn’t want to change it,” says Moondance’s marketing director Alexis Gillis.
“But decor and style change and we needed to adapt to contemporary standards. Finishes required modernising.”
Now the villa sports a fully equipped kitchen, refurbished cupboards and electrics, state-of-the art security and sound systems, wifi and TVs, new carpets, curtains, furniture, software and art.
“We decked balconies and installed new tiling, using Cape Dutch ‘klompie’ tiles for a manicured secret garden of 60-year-old olive trees lining an entertainment area.
“Many changes centred on the landscaping and, being water-conscious, drought-resistant plants were introduced.”
Gillis says after the sea views, the next item to be noticed is the all-glass staircase suspended over an indoor koi pond, leading to entertainment areas and bedroom suites on four levels.
“The villa showcases works by African-inspired artists. Vibrant colours complement the interior. Artists include Velaphi Mzimba, Clive van den Berg, Cyrus Kabiru from Kenya who is currently exhibiting at Zeitz MOCAA, and the late Paul du Toit.
“The 260m² master suite is on the top floor and has a private lounge, study, kitchenette and three balconies, each room centred around the view.
“The villa is an entertainer’s dream with three separate entertainment areas with bars and a wine tasting room. Moondance is equipped for large dinner parties, afternoon lunches, weddings or other events.
“It also has the largest private gym on the Atlantic Seaboard.”
What do you like best about the property?
“The olive grove, which offers 180 degree ocean views.
“I also love the koi pond and the natural feel of the high design elements.”
What tips or advice would you offer readers who want to recreate a similar gorgeous style in their own homes?
“Natural light, open spaces and neutral furniture allow other important elements to stand out, such as artworks and signature furnishings. Keep it simple and bring in colours with smaller finishes.”
Moondance Villa rates are
R130 000 a night during peak season, and from R65 000 a night during low season. This includes a butler service, full breakfast and stocked bars on check-in.
