Who can challenge Durbanville for title?

- MIKE DE BRUYN

DURBANVILLE Bowling Club is riding a wave of success.

The men are setting the pace in Premier League Flag with a twopoint advantage and the women have opened up a whopping seven-point lead in the PL Muter Cup.

The fifth round of Flag today sees the pacesetters heading to second- bottom Somerset West, and a full house of 15 points is there for the taking.

Durbanville will be chasing a fifth victory with the sole blemish recorded at Western Province CC.

League newcomers Somerset West needed a win last time out to improve their chances of avoiding relegation and did just that by stunning WPCC 8.5-6.5 on their home green.

A repeat performance against the defending champions would save their bacon, but a positive outcome is unlikely.

Second-place Oakdale pulled off another giant-killing act when mowing down Constantia 10-5.

If the men from Bellville continue in this vein then a definite tilt at the silverware is on the cards if the frontrunners slip up.

They entertain fifth- placed Glen CC who came off secondbest against Goodwood, who are another contender for the title.

Goodwood came good with a 8½-6½ away victory to remain firmly in contention with four rounds to play.

The northern suburbs club feel confident about their chances of going all the way.

“Watch us,” said team manager Willie Capes.

“The boys are playing well as a collective and feel they have a fair chance of landing top honours.

“No one gave us much of a chance and here we are showing them up.

“We look forward to welcoming WPCC, a side that we respect.

“But we will be out to register another telling performance and make it win number five.

“We have classy skips in Nigel Solomon, David Roos and Mickey Walsh, guys who know how to bring out the best in their charges.

“Special mention to lead Johnny de Sousa who has not put a foot wrong all season, and then our second Sammy Kincaird who was brilliant last weekend. But we are a 12-man brigade first and foremost.”

Fourth- placed Edgemead travel to Pinelands, while the final fixture is a must-win for basement-dwellers Stellenbosch Van der Stel against Constantia, who are third from bottom spot and in need of the points to avoid the drop.

In Muter Cup, Durbanville look an unstoppable force.

A maximum 11-point haul last time registered at home against struggling Bellville tells its own story.

Only three rounds left places the leaders in the pound seats.

Third-placed Constantia are next on the menu for the Durbanville.

Second- placed Helderberg travel to Bellville and a big haul is expected.

Old Oak, who prop up the eight-team standings, are at home to Western Province Cricket Club, while Milnerton travel to Plumstead.
