The City of Cape
Town has a Smart Living handbook to help everyone save water.
The book explains that fresh water is a scarce and important resource.
Most of the world’s water is sea water, with some fresh water found underground and frozen in icecaps. The lack of access to fresh drinking water globally is a growing problem.
Available drinking water is a basic need that we cannot survive without. Plenty of fresh water is required to produce food, goods and services. It is very important for us to understand our role in protecting natural water systems.
Why is water conservation important?
The world's supply of available fresh water is decreasing because cities are getting bigger.
South Africa is a naturally dry and waterstressed country, with below average rainfall.
We can expect increasing water shortages with more droughts and flooding due to climate change.
Supplying fresh water to our growing population costs a lot of money.
Rivers, wetlands and estuaries are threatened by development, pollution and alien vegetation.
