Hoping to dance their way to global stardom

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - NEWS - SOYISO MALITI

A POPULAR city dance group is set to compete in the World of Dance competition in Joburg tomorrow.

The Untimitive Dance group will be strutting its stuff alongside 20 other dance groups in their team division at the national qualifiers at Gold Reef City. It’s the first time that South Africa has hosted the competition.

Rudi Smit, the group’s chor- eographer, said they found out about the contest via social media. They had to compile a two-minute routine for the regional qualifiers.

Smit reckons the group, which was established in 2012, has a good chance to make it to the finals.

“I think we have a very strong presence when we’re on stage together. I think the audience can see the determination and the passion when we dance together.” American pop star Jennifer Lopez owns the TV rights to the competition, and the judges include local celebrity choreographers Sipho Didiza and Lorcia Cooper.

Untimitive is competing in the team category against 20 other groups.

The finals will take place in Los Angeles.

Untimitive Dance’s John Rispel, Rudi Smit (choreographer), Prudence Jacobs and Matthew Power will compete in the World of Dance in Johannesburg.
