Racism in SA exists at all levels of society

-

DEVAN MOONSAMY’s letter published last week raises some interesting points. First of all, what is racism? We are constantly told there are no races but how are we to explain racism if there are no races? If, on the other hand, race exists, why target only whites?

Someone said that patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels; in the same way, claims of racism are the last refuge of the failures.

We just have to listen to the Julius Malemas of this country to find out who the real racists are. And there are plenty of them at all levels of society.

Their failure to compete is explained by racism, colonialism, apartheid, imperialism, Father Christmas or the tooth fairy, but never themselves.

As long as there is somebody to blame, we are all happy; we are victims.

What is called racism is simply Nature’s mechanism for the protection of the species.

As long as there was enough land for everybody, clashes were few, but with a massive increase in the population, groups begin to fight for turf in order to survive.

We see this all over the world, not only in South Africa, where we are all equal, but as always that some are more equal than others.

Oliver Pendell put it differently when he said: “There are only two races in the world: the problem makers and the problem solvers.

“The proportion of problem makers to problem solvers decides if a country is First World or Third World.

South Africa was classified in 1994 as “a Third World country”.

Are whites racist? No more than anybody else.
