Calling all young mountain bike riders to race

- Tyler Roodt

MOUNTAIN bikers of Cape Town, grab your gear and get ready. Entries for the 2018 season of the Spur Schools MTB League are now open.

This year marks the event’s 10th anniversary and it has grown from 1 590 entries from 115 schools in its first year to 12 722 entries from 496 schools in 2017.

Organisers said the league should see a 20-30% increase in entries compared to last year.

Director of Amarider and head organiser of the league, Meurant Botha, said he hoped the league would introduce more schoolchildren to mountain biking.

“By offering MTB as a school sport, it’s the perfect opportunity for those children who lack the ball skills that go with soccer, rugby and cricket to be active as well, and participate in a sport that is as much fun.”

He added that MTB was now present in schools across all nine provinces.

“Every province has been running a full MTB calendar, which is great news.

“Parents and kids particularly enjoy this sport because everyone can participate and have fun, whether on a competitive or social level.

“It’s also a good way of getting kids onto the saddle ddle and away from a mobile device.”

If you want to enter the Spur Schools MTB League, you’ll have ask your parents to complete the online registration on their website – www.spurmtbleague.co.za – before you can enter any regional events.

If you’re one of the first 2 000 riders to be registered,

you will receive a R50 Spur voucher which you can use att any SSpur restauranttt nationwide.tiid

“MTB promotes an overall healthy lifestyle and during the past 10 years has created a pathway for children to follow their dreams.

“We look forward to the next 10 years and to making some more great MTB memories,” added Botha.
