Perfectly served dishes, ideal setting

- MEGAN BAADJIES

DEN ANKER restaurant on the quayside of the V&A Waterfront has been serving a combination of local and Belgian flavours for over two decades.

The Belgian bistro style restaurant is known for their Belgian beers and fresh fish dishes.

My colleague and I were hosted by Brandon. Our welcome drink was a fruit beer cocktail with a blend of pineapple, lime, basil, elderflower and a touch of gin and lime.

The newly added tapas menu, which is found under the small bites section, includes tuna tataki, tempura prawns, mozzarella burrata and pork loin rib.

With the new tapas menu, guests can create their own platters to share or enjoy on their own.

Other additions include pork belly, goat’s cheese tart, goat’s cheese salad and sweet melon carppacio.

Some of the old favourites include the fish dishes like Kingklip and Norwegian salmon.

There was one dish that got my attention, which according to Brandon is a “must have” – the mussel pot.

Served in a medium size stainless steel pot, the mussels are cooked the traditional way, in beer with some parsley, onion and garlic butter. I had to try it, and I am very happy I did.

Inside the steaming pot was beautifully cooked, plump mussels. While I could taste the flavours of the garlic butter, it was not overpowering. I would strongly recommend sharing this dish.

The relaxed setting makes this place perfect for a casual get together for an easy lunch and supper with the family.
