Premier wine farm for sale

Walker Bay estate has trendy tourist precinct

-

THE AUCTION of the Sir Robert Stanford Estate, set against the picturesque backdrop of the Klein River Mountains in Walker Bay, is expected to attract investors with an interest in the property’s “immense potential for future development”.

Anton Koegelenberg, ClareMart’s senior auction agent, describes the property as “one of the premier wine farms in the Whale Coast region”.

Situated on the R43, close to Stanford, the estate measures more than 164 hectares and includes extensive vineyards and a trendy tourist precinct.

“It is an operational wine farm with 67ha under white, red and MCC varietals. Five of the Sir Robert Stanford Estate wines and four of the wines marketed under the Cutters Cove brand are award winners.”

With nine dams on the property, the estate benefits from high quality water from virgin sources such as boreholes, mountain streams and a fountain.

“The working area of the farm is centrally located, with farm buildings covering 1 200m2. This includes a helicopter hangar and landing pad.”

The old farmyard has been transformed into a busy tourist area with the Zesty Lemon restaurant; a gift shop; a childrens’ play area; a boutique wine-tasting room and wine shop in the historic cellar; luxury guest accommodation for four in an elegant farm cottage; a 1 500-seater amphitheatre for events; and a retro grappa distillery and tasting room.

“Tourism in this area of the Whale Coast has been booming over the past five years,” says Koegelenberg.

He says there are more than 120 species of fynbos on the land and the estate is in the top 2% of the Biodiversity in Wine Initiative, which has recognised its commitment to good farming practices and care of the land.

“Visitors enjoy mountain biking and hiking on the estate trails,” he says. “The property will be further enhanced by the upcoming upgrades to the R43.”

The estate will be auctioned on site by the ClareMart Auction Group at noon on

June 15. Viewings are by appointment.
