Plucky Jordy isn’t upset by Medina’s mindgames

-

Otter Trail Race in October”.

Only the top ten men and out right next to him after a nice-scoring wave on which he had ramped off the lip for a full rotation air reverse, sticking the landing clean as you like, and in full view of an obviously miffed Medina after his mess-up earlier.

What ensued was almost comical in its frenetic intensity.

Shoulder to shoulder they paddled furiously back to the line-up in a bid to get priority to catch the next wave after Flores, who held priority to get the next one. The other two were fighting for the rights to the second. And they only had four minutes and 42 seconds to women at the end of the fifth race of the series in Scotland get back and catch it.

“Jordy with one of the biggest wing spans on tour and Medina the biggest heart not to back down in a fight,” said a commentator as arms flailed and spray flew.

In Jordy’s words, “I knew that those guys were going to peacock pretty hard and battle for priority so I just opted to keep to myself. That paddle battle was crazy. He brushed my leg and I thought it was an accident ... then when it happened again, I thought, okay, let’s go.”

Akin to pulling a person off the ball in soccer or preventing a rugby player from playing the ball, sneaky Medina was up to his tricks. In the end, Smith, who is desperate for a good result, took the heat, with Flores through in second and Medina eliminated in equal ninth place.

That’ll learn ya Gabby. While it does not quite equate with the enormity of Zidane’s foolish act, it did have a karmic consequence.

Mind you, Real Madrid are the Champions League champions. I may have over stated the karma bit.

A giant swell yesterday lead organisers of the Vans Surf Pro Classic to seek shelter at a protected break near Lamberts Bay. The primary break of Yo-Yos was pummelled by a death-defying 10ft+ stormsea in onshore west winds. Surfers from Hawaii, USA, Australia, South America, Europe, Mauritius and Japan will be surfing in the WSL Qualifying Series QS1,500 Men’s event in addition to a QS1,000 women’s and JQS1,000 junior men’s events. See www.worldsurfleague.com

See you at the Logjam festival at Surfers’ Corner in Muizenberg today, where a whole host of cool activities, from long- board events, skate sessions, a surf market, after-party and surfboard art exhibition will be taking place. Go to www. log-jam.co.za

After yestrday’s giant swell, things have calmed down today, with solid 8-10ft leftovers in strong NW winds and scattered rain. It’s a real taste of a proper Cape winter. Muizenberg will be 2- 4’ in frisky offshores. Tomorrow sees the swell ebb further, dropping from 6-8’ to 4-6’ in moderate S to SE breezes becoming fresh to strong SE late in the day. The wind direction not great for Muizenberg.
