Calls for full investigation into mosque attack

FREEDOM of Religion South Africa ( FOR SA) has condemned the brutal attack at a Malmesbury mosque on the eve of Eid.

Three people were killed including the knife-wielding attacker on Thursday.

“We believe this is a very concerning indication of the lack of religious freedom and religious tolerance in South Africa, despite our constitutional protections,” they said.

FOR SA is calling upon the government to investigate this matter to the fullest extent of the law and to ensure that religious freedom, and freedom of conscience and belief, are promoted and protected at all times.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, two worshippers were killed and had their throats slit by a Somalian national.

He was then gunned down by police after resisting arrest.

Last month three people were attacked at the Verulam Shia mosque in Durban.

One died and two others, including the Moulana were seriously injured.

Abbas Essop had his throat slit and died on his way to hospital.

Minister of Police Bheki Cele said: “We haven’t made any link between the Verulam mosque and Malmesbury Mosque attacks, but we are not ruling out any links.”
