Sunday competition still a bone of contention

- MIKE DE BRUYN

PREMIER LEAGUE Flag competition on a Sunday and at the same venue may not happen after all.

The affected clubs are divided on the subject.

The usual Saturday afternoon slot has its supporters, and the same can be said for Sundays.

Western Province Bowls president Graeme Kemp mooted the idea but will he win the day knowing bowlers are hesitant when it comes to change.

But all is not lost, a final decision will be taken at the next council meeting scheduled for July 21.

“We’ll know the score then,” said Kemp.

“Items to be discussed will be whether to have mid-afternoon tea or no tea, the scoring system for Flag and Muter, and the Premier League being moved from a Saturday to a Sunday.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how things pan out.

“Right now it’s too close to call.

“It could come down to the southern suburbs club having the swing vote in favour of the status.

“I’ve had favourable meetings with club presidents from the Northern and Basin clubs and they are split down the middle, but whether the same applies for south clubs Constantia, Plumstead, Meadowridge and Bergvliet, I can’t say.

“We’re not going to be dictating to them at all, we just want to have them hear what we have to say before they voice an opinion via their membership base.

“Once we’ve consulted all relevant parties and taken into account all the pros and cons, the WP executive will make the final call.

“If it ends up being a 50-50 split, watch this space.

“At the end of the day my reasoning for a change in course centres on getting more members to play Flag and Muter,” added Kemp.

“Surely that can only be good for the game.

“A new concept deserves a chance... throwing toys out the cot makes no sense to me.”
