Spur hosts cooking competition

- Tyler Roodt

THE Silwood School of Cookery in Rondebosch recently hosted an intense cook-off between family duos from across Cape Town in the fifth Spur Secret Tribe Chief Cook competition.

The event was held on May 26 and saw 15 teams of two competing for victory in the competition.

The teams were composed of a young Spur Secret

Tribe member and a family member they chose to cook with.

The competition consisted of two categories: making a unique boerewors roll, using a Spur sauce as a basting, and making flapjacks from scratch and serving them as a restaurant-style dessert.

The creative head of Spur marketing, Joe Stead, said: “We are always overjoyed to see how much fun all the participants have in the kitchen.

“Our lives are so busy and this event is an opportunity for families to slow down, spend time in the kitchen making great food from scratch, and enjoy each other’s company.”

Ashton Ellman, 10, and his mother Kim won the boerewors roll category and Mika-eel Omar, 12, and his mother Tasneem the flapjack category. Ashton said: “My mom said we should just have fun and enjoy it, we didn’t think we’d win.

“I enjoyed it a lot, especially cooking with my mom. I learnt about mixing sauces to make a new tasty one and how to know when to turn a flapjack.”

Mika-eel said: “It was a really fun experience as one of our favourite things to do is watch cooking competition shows. We were excited to be chosen and had a wonderful time.”

The winning duos went home with MasterChef

Junior cooking sets, Spur meal vouchers, Spur sauce hampers and some fresh culinary knowledge.
