Millions for Gene’s wet suit

-

THE WATER-stained, grey woollen suit worn by Gene Kelly in the classic 1952 MGM musical Singin’

in the Rain was sold on auction five years ago for £65 000 (now about R1.2 million).

The garment was bought by Robert Earl, the founder of the restaurant chain Planet Hollywood, who had been after it since it resurfaced on the auction market early in 2013.

The piece of Hollywood history may have come at a price but like the film, it has aged well.

Singin’ in the Rain topped the AFI’s Greatest Movie Musicals list and is ranked as the fifth-greatest American motion picture of all time in its updated list of the greatest American films in 2007.
