THE glittering event took place at the Kelvin Grove Ballroom on November 10, and raised a record amount of one million rand for four local charities. The black-tie affair was attended by diplomats and honorary consuls representing 26 countries, as well as their friends and business associates. The mayor’s office, Independent Newspapers and the local business community also supported the fund-raising event that has become a highlight on Cape Town’s social calendar over the past seven years The Consular Ball is known for its auction of unconventional items and this year the guests were vying for a tour to Slovenia to meet the World’s Best Female Chef for 2017, Ana Roš, and enjoy her culinary delights. Another unique item was a one-day trip to Antarctica, courtesy of the Consular mission of Paraguay to experience the unique continent of white snow, blue ice and the midnight sun. The guests were entertained by Quick Change – a Russian duo who were flown in from Europe to perform their delightful act. The Tygerberg Children’s Choir proved to be another highlight of the evening. The local charities that will benefit from this year’s Consular Ball are the Durbanville Children’s Home, Cape Times Bursary Fund, Proud Partners and Shine Literacy.
