Beaufort West deputy mayor is hospitalised

- NORMAN CLOETE Special Assignment

THE deputy mayor of Beaufort West, Truman Prince is recovering in hospital after suffering a heart attack yesterday.

The news came out yesterday afternoon and municipal officials were at the hospital at 1pm, but weren’t allowed to see Prince.

Prince is a former mayor of Beaufort West and no stranger to controversy. He has been accused of soliciting teenage prostitutes by investigative TV show and was suspended after the programme was aired.

In 2016, he was accused of assaulting a female police officer.

Also in 2016, the DA laid a charge of corruption against Prince after he allegedly asked service providers to donate to the ANC’s election funds.

He was also accused of racism and shoving females. Prince was found guilty of drunk-driving and fined R2000 after an incident in 2010.

After the 2016 municipal elections, the DA in coalition with the Karoo Democratic Force (KDF) took over the Beaufort West municipality from the ANC, who had Prince as its mayor.

Last year in June, the KDF’s sole councillor Noel Constable sided with the ANC. He became mayor, with Prince as his deputy.

Prince was admitted to the Beaufort West Hospital and is in a stable condition.

Regional ANC secretary Windy Plaatjie told Weekend Argus Prince was at home when he suffered the heart attack.

Plaatjie said the ANC and everyone in Beaufort West were in shock.

“Truman is such a fit and active person,” said Plaatjie.

Prince is in his 50s.
