FOR THE BULLS

- Ockert De Villiers

In a Bulls pack brimming with beastly man-mountains, it is difficult to isolate one player who is expected to prove why they are considered to be super.

But there is good reason why there has been so much excitement surrounding Duane Vermeulen’s move to the Bulls’ Kraal. It is not only his resemblance to the Marvel character Thor that has earned him that nickname, but also his presence on the field that has given him the air of a superhero.

Vermeulen has not seen Super Rugby action since 2015 and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the change of pace. The Springbok number eight recently had a stint with Japanese side Kubota Spears where the speed of the game was a closer resemblance to that of Super Rugby, compared to that of the Northern hemisphere.

But Vermeulen may still have some Northern hemisphere DNA left in his body after spending three years with French Top 14 giants Toulon. Vermeulen will have the added pressure of taking on the Stormers, the team where he spent a large chunk of his career, and will be looking to reward the Bulls for putting their faith in him. There is no doubting his pedigree, with him boasting 109 Super Rugby caps, with the beefy ball-carrying beast expected to give his adopted team a rare victory over the Stormers.
