Friendships formed in Neverland
For the cast of Edgemead High’s production of ‘Peter Pan’ the highlight is the bonds they made
THE characters of Peter Pan came to life at Edgemead High School as a cast of more than 30 pupils performed the musical production this week.
The story is about a boy who wouldn’t grow up. With the help of his tiny friend the fairy Tinkerbell, Peter and three children are whisked away to Neverland.
Caitlin Viljoen, 17, who plays Wendy, described her character as a very imaginative, mature and kind young girl who loves taking care of her two younger brothers and telling them stories.
“She is fascinated by Peter Pan and follows him to the Neverland where she discovers The Lost Boys and becomes a motherly figure to them. Wendy faces pirates, heartbreak and a jealous Tinkerbell throughout this magical adventure no one can forget,” said the Grade 12 pupil.
“We all became so close and it feels like a family on and off stage. It was a privilege and honoured to have worked with such a hard-working and dedicated cast. They have always shown support for one another and the relationships formed are truly the biggest highlight,” she said.
The former Edgemead Primary School pupil has taken part in a number of musical productions, including Grease.
Director Lauren Wild said Peter Pan had been chosen because it is a classic children’s story which lends itself to creative ideas.
“This was our bi-annual musical production, celebrating the creativity of our performing arts departments. It takes more than a year for a production like this to be planned and executed as pupils have to audition.
“The audition process requires the three factors of acting, dancing and singing,” said Wild.
“We had amazing and supportive audiences.”
The musical production took place over seven days from last week until yesterday.
