Bid to live in an area of scenic beauty

Four-bedroomed home in Smithfield showcases architecture from 1800s, and offers views of Free State landscapes and mountains

A FOUR-bedroomed Smithfield home with a large, landscaped garden will be among the properties to be auctioned at Rawson Auctions Western Cape’s multiple property auction on April 24.

“The quaint town of Smithfield, situated 134km from Bloemfontein, is in an area of great scenic beauty, and the landscaped garden of the home to be auctioned offers views of sprawling Free State landscapes and the neighbouring mountains,” says Tanya Jovanovski, franchisee of Rawson Auctions Western Cape.

Smithfield, in a largely farming district, is the third oldest town in the Free State, dating back to 1848, and still showcases architecture from that period, as does the home that will be up for bidding.

“The property’s finishes include a zinc roof, plaster walls and steel windows, in line with this classic style,” Jovanovski says.

The house stands on a 446m² erf and all four bedrooms are of generous proportions.

The main bedroom has an en suite bathroom and a private stoep area and is equipped with air conditioning, instead of the ceiling fans found in the other bedrooms. In addition, it has traditional built-in cupboards and a walk-in closet, and is large enough to accommodate a king-size bed.

The house has an extremely large farm-style kitchen with a separate breakfast room, two massive reception rooms and a second bathroom. The kitchen has built-in cupboards with granite tops and includes a scullery and laundry room.

The reception rooms consist of a lounge and dining area with a fireplace, and a separate formal lounge/dining room/study/office/entrance hall with a pressed ceiling, wooden floors, curtain rails and roller blinds.

The garden has a stone wall in front, and the property also offers a double garage and visitors’ parking; two storerooms with reed ceilings and water and electricity; an outside toilet and a garden shed that used to be a cow shed and still has the original feeding trough.

Extras include a borehole and water tank fitted with a pump system which supplies water to the house.

The property is fully fenced and is equipped with eight CCTV cameras and an alarm system.

Jovanovski says Smithfield, which markets itself as being “halfway to anywhere in South Africa”, is home to lots of B&Bs, guest houses and farm-stay accommodation.

It is frequented by South Africans and international tourists and offers an array of outdoor activities, such as birding, hiking and cycling on the back roads of the southern Free State.

The home will be auctioned at noon on April 24 at the Rawson Property Group’s head office at 222 Main Road, Rondebosch.

Offers should be submitted on Rawson Auctions’ Offer to Purchase form. A copy can be obtained by contacting the auctions team at auctions.info@ rawson.co.za or 021 837 1700. Bids can be delivered to the Rawson Property Group’s Rondebosch head office.
