Talented singer

- Keagan Mitchell

FOR many children, being on stage can be a daunting task but for Saskia Mc Dilling it is a walk in the park.

The Grade 7 pupil at Laerskool Hendrik Louw will be jetting off to the US to compete in the Talent America competition in June.

However, the 12-year-old from Strand requires some financial assistance to make her dream come true.

Saskia, who has a sister and a brother, was invited to the international showpiece after dominating the Talent Africa National Championships in Port Elizabeth this month.

She was in a class of her own and bagged gold in the vocal jazz and open categories in the 12-14 age group. Other categories included acting and modelling.

Her journey started in February after claiming the two gold medals in her respective categories at the Talent Africa Regionals at Curro Brackenfell.

Referring to the SA Championships, Saskia said it was an amazing experience.

“The National Championships was an overwhelming experience but it boosted my confidence on stage. I enjoyed the fact that I competed against other talented children. This was one of the best competitions I competed in thus far,” said Saskia, who received a firstplace certificate in the vocal jazz, R&B, rock and pop categories in the 9-11 age group and a special award for the highest points at the Culture Caravan International Project Festival and Contest, Euro Sing Competition, in Poland last year.“My goal is to complete school and become an international singer,” said Saskia, who has been singing since the age of 5. The first time she performed she sang a solo in front of her church congregation.

Music teacher Sicilie Barnard said Saskia has grown into a confident and energetic performer.

“She has a beautiful and strong voice. It is difficult to believe that she is so young and doing so well. We are proud of her and wish her all the best,” she said.
