- JACQUES VAN DER WESTHUYZEN jacques.vdwesthuyzen@inl.co.za early showing.

Willie le Roux 7: Cheslin Kolbe 9:

Brilliant in all departments. Scored two excellently-taken tries, good in the air, under the high ball, and tackled well. His hit on an Italian player allowed RG Snyman to score a first Test try. Hopefully his ankle injury isn’t serious.

Lukhanyo Am 7:

Solid in defence, made a good turnover early on, but he also missed a high ball. Made two good counter-attacking runs before finally crossing the tryline after an intercept.

Damian de Allende 7:

Another impressive outing which included hard ball-carries, good off-loads, good breakdown contesting and big tackles – one when he back-tracked to save the team.

Makazole Mapimpi 7:

An impressive showing by the winger who scored a wonderfully-taken try after Le Roux’s chip-kick into space. Tackled strongly as well.

Handre Pollard 7:

A mixed bag. Some nice runs, touches and well-placed kicks, for the line and into space, once when he kick-passed to Kolbe for his second try. Also fluffed a few kicks and handling let him down on occasion.

Faf de Klerk 6:

A fairly quiet game, but kicked more accurately and better than in last outing against All Blacks. Has he any licence to run at the opposition and pass the ball inside the Bok half?

Duane Vermeulen 7:

main kick-receiver. Made some big hits and was a real presence at the breakdowns.

Pieter-Steph du Toit 7:

An engine that never runs out of petrol. Carried and tackled, carried and tackled. Lost a ball with Boks on attack and was disallowed a try by the TMO.

Siya Kolisi 7:

Made a number of tackles in his most industrious game for Boks since return from injury. Carried strongly, but will be unhappy about “obstructing” play in lead up to Du Toit “try”.

Lood de Jager 8:

Continued from Namibia game with another strong performance. Dominated the lineouts, carried well, and often, cleaned out at rucks and tackled and tackled.

Eben Etzebeth 7:

Fulfilled the enforcer role well; he carried hard, led the mauls, and tackled well when Boks were on the back foot. Contested well in the line-outs.

Frans Malherbe 7:

Scrummed well before the Italians cried off with injury and pain. Got around the field and made some good hits, too.

Bongi Mbonambi 8:

A menace all-round. His line-out throwing was pin-point accurate, he carried well and scored a try from the driving maul. Also tackled like a beast and showed some good hands at times ... a star performer.

Beast Mtawarira 7:

“Sent” two Italians to the side of the field with his power at scrum-time in dominant

Replacements: 8:

Malcolm Marx scored a late try and got stuck in, Steven Kitshoff carried strongly and tackled well, Vincent Koch made tackle after tackle, RG Snyman scored a first

Test try in impressive cameo appearance, Franco Mostert was busy in his time on the field, while Francois Louw got stuck in too. In the backs Herschel Jantjies’ service was swift, while Frans Steyn ran hard and kicked smartly.

A solid outing; his best this year. Decent under the high ball, good positioning at the back and some clever chip-kicks into space; he set up Mapimpi for his second try.
