Cape Point is a hiker’s paradise

A perfect spot for a family day out with various routes convenient for all fitness levels

- VIWE NDONGENI-NTLEBI

FINALLY, we can now safely say that it’s hiking season in Cape Town.

The weather is perfect for anyone interested in going on a mountain adventure.

If you’re looking for new routes to explore, Cape Point is a hiker’s paradise, and there are a number of beautiful and manageable short walks throughout the reserve that you can try out.

Each walk serves up a selection of panoramic ocean and mountain views, as well as access to unspoilt beaches.

You can choose a walk or hike based on your fitness level. There are different options available.

There are easy hiking routes that are not too steep or strenuous, but with a few uphill stretches.

Then there are flat routes you can take just to enjoy the views in the reserve.

I tackled the Vasco da Gama

Peak Trail. The trail requires only a moderate level of fitness. There were probably a few steep parts but the rest was a nice, fast route.

This route can be enjoyed by both children and adults and it’s perfect for a family day out.

The best part about this walk was learning about different types of flowers along the road, through our tour guide. We were met with spectacular views and scenery.

The most rewarding thing about any walk at Cape Point is that you get to enjoy the restaurant in the reserve. There they have a variety of meals to suit any appetite.

Another highlight of my hike was seeing the old Cape Point lighthouse which towers in the reserve.

If you’re not interested in taking the walk up to the lighthouse, there’s an option to take the funicular at the station located next to the restaurants and parking area.

This place offers one of the best views at Cape Point.

With the summer heat coming, it’s best to go hiking in the cooler mornings.

Tip: Take along your South African ID to pay R76 per adult and R39 per child per day, instead of the R303 per adult and R152 per child, paid by foreign visitors.
