Carla kicks butt in Asia
CARLA Lüff has been in a class of her own this year, and hopes to end her karate season with a bang.
The 12-year-old claimed third place in the 12-13 girls’ age group in the kata under-42kg section, and the bronze medal in the 12-13 girls’ age group, in the kata team event at the World Goju-Ryu Karate Federation Championship in Malaysia last month.
Kata is a choreographed pattern of movements practised in martial arts.
Carla, a Grade 6 pupil at Eversdal Primary School in Durbanville, also helped Team South Africa – which bagged six gold, 13 silver and 33 bronze medals – to seventh place in the medal standings.
A member of Goshukan Durbanville, Carla said: “I am quite happy with how I performed at the championships.
“Being my first major international competition, I didn’t quite know what to expect. I will be better prepared next time, having done this competition.
“I enjoyed participating against the best of the best in my age group from around the world.
“I felt very proud to be able to represent South Africa. It was fun to cheer on my fellow teammates as well.
“It was very hot in Malaysia. It was great to spend time in a new city (Kuala Lumpur) and experience a different culture.”
Carla was gearing up for the Karate SA league event in Durban this weekend.
“I would really like to end the season on a high note and do my best,” she said.
Karate instructor at Goshukan Durbanville, Troy Futter said Carla had developed hugely since she first started training with him.
“Her hard work and dedication really shows when she steps on to the tatami
(mat) to compete in competitions.
“She has the attitude of a true champion, and always wants to learn more and be better. I am extremely proud of all her achievements,” Futter said.
