Revving up for day to enjoy your garden, wear crown
THE sight of a beautiful garden is always breathtaking to others.
This year, National Garden Day will be celebrated on October 20.
It will be celebrated by unsung heroes including people who are passionate about gardening and also those using it to help their communities.
Floral artist and gardener at Babylonstoren, Constance Stuurman, said: “Garden Day is the one day of the year that you can stand back, relax and enjoy your garden.
“It’s also an important day to connect with your family, friends and neighbours and this is why the call to action is put down your tools, pop on a flower crown and invite family, friends and neighbours to share the day with you.”
“Another important thing to note is that you don’t need to have a big garden to celebrate Garden Day even if you only have a small pot plant in your home, or go to a friend that has a balcony with pot plants – you can still celebrate Garden Day,” said Stuurman, who believes spending regular time in the garden has health advantages.
“Gardening is considered so beneficial in the UK that it’s estimated that one in five doctors practise ‘green prescribing’, where patients partake in regular gentle activities such as community gardening to prevent diseases like diabetes and dementia, and tackle issues like isolation,” she said.
In the run-up to the annual event, Garden Day will host free flower crown making workshops at the Neighbourhoods Market in Cape Town on Saturday and at the Oranjezicht City Farm Market in Granger Bay on October 19 from 12pm until 2pm.
“The reason why the workshops are ahead of the event is so that you can have your own flower crown ready to wear at home on Garden Day.”
“There will be Garden Day team members on hand to help and show you how easy they are to create,” she added.
