SA celebs amped for new year
With 2019 about to draw to a close, we spoke to local celebrities about what they want for the new year
CASSPER NYOVEST
Rapper Cassper Nyovest will be hard at work this festive season with annual bookings daily until January 4.
“In the New Year I plan to take a break. I am still deciding where to go with my family. It may be an overseas holiday or somewhere in our beautiful country,” he said.
KHANYI MBAU
TV personality Khanyi Mbau hasn’t had the greatest year, and says she’ll be spending time with her daughter, Khanukani, 13, on New Year’s Eve instead of partying the night away.
“2019 has not been that great, so we’re going to be based at home (for New Year’s Eve) and having fun and keeping ourselves busy within Johannesburg,” she said.
UNATHI NKAYI
Singer and Idols SA judge Unathi Nkayi has had a mega 2019.
To kick-start the new decade, she will release a single called I See You with an accompanying video at the end of next month. Nkayi will continue on her book tour throughout the country, before filming season 16 of Idols SA and launching a “huge” campaign.
“The campaign will make our people proud in terms of our African identity, who we are as people, and how we see ourselves as African women, and our beauty. It is something I am very proud of,” she said.
ZODWA WABANTU
The entertainer and reality TV star ended her 2019 with the launch of her perfume brand.
“(In 2020) I want to cut down on spending too much money; I am cutting down on friends who are not beneficial to me. I wish to stop drinking alcohol or to at least cut down on how much I drink. I will exercise more next year and be fully active at the gym. Hopefully it comes true and I stick to it,” she said.
TBO TOUCH
Entrepreneur Thabo Molefe (better known as Tbo Touch) said he’ll remember 2019 as the year he bought a new car, purchased land and launched his alcohol lable, 48 Gin.
Next year, he plans to drink less and be more focused. He also wishes for good health and to be happy.
ZOLANI MAHOLA
Musician Zolani Mahola wraps up her 17 years with Freshlyground on New Year’s Eve with her last concert with the group at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.
The singer said she was looking forward to swimming in the ocean on New Year’s Day.
Mahola’s new year resolutions include letting go of other people’s opinions.
“I resolve to let go of the habit of letting other people’s opinions of me guide my responses, feelings and actions,” she said.
JIMMY NEVIS
Musician Jimmy Nevis’s 2020 resolutions are about health and well-being.
“My new year’s resolution is to climb more mountains, meditate more and just have fun!”
ZOË BROWN
TV and radio presenter Zoë Brown’s 2020 resolutions are all about saying “yes”.
“I want to say yes to new opportunities. I want to travel to at least two destinations and I want to let go of the things that no longer bring me happiness,” Brown said.
VATISWA NDARA
Veteran actress Vatiswa Ndara is hoping for a better 2020.
“From a personal and professional level, 2019 has been one of the lowest, if not darkest points. My open letter (about the plight of SA actors) received unprecedented circulation in the public space with on occasion rave reviews.”
Ndara said that going into 2020 she resolved to remain true to herself and her beliefs.
MARC LOTTERING
Comedian Marc Lottering said he never makes any new year’s resolutions.
“I have no resolutions. I never do. I just hope to keep doing amazing stuff,” he said.
