THE second Homegrown Expo, which focuses on authentic, home-grown finds, will take place at Canal Walk from March 5 to 8.

There will be something for everyone, from clothing to ceramics, decor, jewellery and furniture, say the organisers. They promises visitors an “opportunity to get to know and support local design and crafts” while helping boost the economy.

“We’re blown away by the talent and entrepreneurship of our exhibitors, who have all been hand-picked, and we strongly believe local entrepreneurs should be given the opportunity to introduce their products to the market,” said organiser Miriam Vallie.

“When you support handmade, you’re not only supporting a person, small business, family and our economy. You’re also purchasing a small part of an artist’s heart. Be sure not to miss this exciting, one-of-a-kind event.”

Creations will include ceramics by Ronel Bakker, whose studio is in the shadows of the Klein Winterhoek Mountains. According to Bakker, living in a rural village surrounded by more nature than technology allows “free-thinking and organic transformation” in all her handmade work.

“With very little interference, I merely act as a guide, allowing my medium to take the shape it was meant to be. Whether it’s a bowl, a jug or a vase, I’m honoured to be a part of the new life forming under my hands,” said Bakker.

Michelle Jooste promises to dazzle jewellery lovers with items that are made to last and have minimal impact on the environment.

Jooste makes use of “sustainably-sourced materials” in her designs. “We have a strong up-cycling ethic and try to limit packaging.”

CoralBloom is a family-run business that started with a small jewellery range. “Our range is inspired by our passion for art, love of the sea and admiration of Cape flora. We want to share and inspire the same awareness, respect and wonder we grew up with,” she said.

For mommas and pappas, there is also Fox & Moon, a proudly South African baby, kids and home store, founded in 2010 by sisters Amanda Meyer and Cindy Schafer.

Fox & Moon emerged out of love for modern design and art, particularly within the nursery and baby sector.

“Our aim is to create unique, modern, clean and contemporary designs consisting of nursery room decor, toys, pillows and home decor.

“All our products are handmade with your baby and little one in mind and therefore adhere to the highest quality materials and eco-friendly dyes,” the sisters said.

The Homegrown Expo will run from Thursday to Sunday, 9am to 9pm. Entry is free.
