Homes located in the heart of communities

- ABBEYFIELD SPOKESPERSON

ABBEYFIELD is a charity that provides homes that support older people, who would otherwise be living alone. Founded in 1956 by major Richard Carr–Gomm; having returned from his military service he saw a real need amongst older people in his local community, whom he recognised were living alone, lonely and disconnected from their communities. Realising that they could benefit from having somewhere that could bring them together, he spent his army gratuity on a house in Bermondsey, in South London, England and moved four local, lonely older people into it – the first Abbeyfield home. Today, Abbeyfield operates across the UK and internationally, supporting over 9 000 older people. We also have a vast network of more than 4 500 volunteers who help to guide and support our important work. It is our mission to enhance the quality of life for older people through high quality accommodation in a stimulating environment that supports the maintenance of a socially active lifestyle and Carr-Gomm’s founding vision remains the basis of all Abbeyfield’s today; in South Africa, the UK , Jersey, Belgium, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
