A LIFELONG dream has come true for a local cycling club quartet.
The Ravensmead-based Kinetic Cycling Club has four members representing South Africa at the African Continental Road and Track Championships in Egypt.
The event, which started on Tuesday, will see them compete in the following categories: sprint events, endurance events, road race, individual time trial and team time trial.
At the time of deadline, the SA junior women’s team bagged gold in the team time trial event, while the SA junior men’s team finished in third place in the same event.
McKenzie Pedro said she is hoping for a podium finish in her events. “I would like to gain more experience on road racing. I love the freedom that comes with cycling and the opportunities it provides for us such as travelling,” she said.
Amber Hindmarch said: “I’m a first-year junior so my expectations are quite low but I hope to get at least one medal.”
Justin Chesterton’s expectations are to scoop a medal in his events.
“At the competition, I am hoping to learn about other countries and how they race,” he said.
Jason Bruintjies said: “It’s my first time representing my country and going up against other countries.
“I would like to learn how I stack up against other riders in Africa. I love sport in general, but I love how you have to push yourself and how becoming better in cycling is always the objective,” said the six-time national road and track champion.
Club chairperson O’Ryan Bruintjies said he was proud of the four riders.
“They are all very hard-working and motivated and they deserve to be part of the South African team.
“They will be true ambassadors for our country and club. K i n e t i c Cycling has a huge focus on youth development and the selection of these young riders are proof that our development programme is effective,” he said.
