Hilarious TikTok trends that will never stop being funny

- SACHA VAN NIEKERK

MANY people joined TikTok last year out of sheer boredom but they chose to stay on the app for its range of hilarious prank challenges, dances and the laughter it brought during an otherwise dull time in our lives.

TikTok trends we will always love:

Main character

All too often, we go through the motions of life without appreciating the little things that make our lives special.

The audio from a TikTok which went viral last year preaches: “You have to start romanticising your life. You have to start thinking of yourself as the main character.

If you don’t, life will continue to pass you by.” The words served as a reminder to find beauty in the mundanity of lockdown. From clips of themselves laughing at a joke to basking in the sunshine or simply lying in bed, it seems people resonated with the idea of choosing to be the main character, resharing the audio with their own montages.

#BussItChallenge

An app that’s all about challenges, it embraces all shapes and sizes, encouraging people to celebrate their bodies. Using the song Buss It by Texas rapper Erica Banks, the videos involve filming a clip of yourself looking a little rough, followed by a smooth transition into one of you “bussin” it, as the words from Nelly’s classic Hot in Herre come in. Chloe Bailey, Jordyn Woods, Iggy Azalea and Monica Denise are among the many celebrities who have been taking part in the challenge.

Ayo, nose job check

TikTokers talk candidly about the work they’ve had done on the app, even going so far as to share the names of their cosmetic surgeons.

When the trend started to blow up, it mainly consisted of people covering their noses while saying the words “Ayo, nose job check”.

What followed was a series of “before” pictures to build up intensity before the final reveal. Lip fillers, facial injections of all sorts, lifts, tucks and everything in between have all been included under the trend.

Tell me you’re South African without actually saying it

The basis of the “Tell me you’re *blank* without saying it” trend is to express something to your followers without having to say the words.

The trend has been used in a variety of unusual ways, from people sharing videos of their partners being dorky, to conveying to their audience that their partner would never cheat on them and showing their audience they are a huge fan of a certain pop star by showing them all their branded merch and CDs.

However, the South African twist is too good not to mention. People would stitch the audio with visuals of themselves doing typical South African things, like being woken up by hadedas or experiencing load shedding.

Tell your pet a story

Fetch, walkies, treats, beach … There are certain words that tend to pique our dogs’ interest a little more than others.

With that knowledge, a TikTok user came up with one of the most adorable trends to make the rounds on the internet. From wags to ear perks, head tilts and slobbery bouts of pure bouncing joy, whenever their owners used one of their favourite words in their story, their precious pets would have the best responses.

I’m Busy Right Now

Playful pranks end in fits of laughter for viewers, which is why they’re popular on TikTok.

The “I’m busy right now” challenge had people calling up their friends and family only to tell them that they couldn’t take their call and hang up. The looks of confusion and disbelief on their faces is what led to the trend going viral.

The entire Kardashian clan took part, creating their own spin on it. Sitting in uniformed rows, they called Justin Bieber, Tristan Thompson and even James Charles, greeting their fellow celebs with blank stares. Can you even begin to imagine how intimidated they must have felt?
