Giving girls confidence to hold their heads high

- KEAGAN MITCHELL keagan.mitchell@inl.co.za

SHE MIGHT not be able to change the world, but Bianca Langedyk is doing her part for someone in need.

In 2013, Bianca started her own charity called Goodies for Girls, where she collects and donates feminine hygiene products (sanitary pads and toiletries). The aim of this project is to give young girls the confidence to step out in society with their heads held high. The collected items are distributed in Wallacedene, farms around Bottelary Road, Genadendal in the Western Cape and Kariega (formally known as Uitenhage).

And with the generous help of friends, the project now includes Goodies for Kids. Here, they want to make every child feel they matter and teach them about personal hygiene from a young age.

It has now also grown into Goodies for Guys, teaching boys about hygiene and self-respect; Goodies for Greys where the charity supports the underprivileged elderly with monthly toiletries they might not be able to have access to; and Goodies for Paws, where the needs of pets are seen to.

Bianca said: “Kids and guys also receive toiletries. From a very young age, my parents taught me the importance of giving back, and as I’ve been blessed in so many ways in my life,

I feel it’s my responsibility to always give back.

“I believe that it’s my calling to entertain people and make them happy. That’s why I’m also involved in the performing arts. But when I’m busy with charity work I also feel that I’m fulfilling my life calling, especially to see smiles on people's faces,” she said.

Apart from helping those in need, Bianca enjoys ballet, drama, modelling, singing and contemporary dancing.

Nikkie Mitchel, who receives feminine hygiene products on a regular basis, said: “Bianca does a lot for us, but the biggest help is the monthly goody bag she helps me and many teenagers with.

“Bianca is not only beautiful outside but also has a wonderful heart. She inspires me to do better for myself. Her friendly smile and hard-working attitude is something I learn from.”

Bianca’s mother, Nadia, said they support her in every way. “We as a family believe in the principles of giving and blessing those around you. But it also keeps Bianca’s feet on the ground and her spirit humble to be appreciative of all her talents and blessings.”
