A BOOK which is part of a series called Veld Friends teaches about the power of friendships.

Author Andrew Dawson said he was influenced by the sunshine, smiles and energy of the city he comes from: Durban.

“I've taken that energy and tried my hand at every type of story, but I think I click most with children’s books,” he said.

Dawson said having a 5-yearold boy opened his mind and heart to the wonderful world of children’s literature.

The book,

Walter the Warthog and Sindele the Stork, is about a smelly warthog who meets a beautiful stork.

“He tries to get her attention by doing all sorts of silly things and eventually discovers that he just needs to be himself.”

Dawson said he was inspired by seeing how children can be held back by shyness. He said if you want to be friends with someone, just go ahead and talk to them; everyone wants the same thing and that is to get along and be friends. Friendship is everything.

He said the book will appeal to children between the ages of 3 and 7. Parents will enjoy it too.

“Who doesn’t love a snorting, farting warthog””

Other books in the series are

Walter Warthog Makes a New Friend, and Sindele the Stork has a Secret Admirer.

Walter the Warthog and Sindele the Stork is published by Penguin Random House South Africa and is in good bookshops.

It’s was also available online from Takealot, Loot, Exclusive Books, Reader’s Warehouse and Graffiti Books. https:// www.penguinrandomhouse. co.za/book/veld-friends-book1-walter-warthog-and-sindelestork/9780639608303
